Biloxi

Robert Smalto-Gil

It fled the house at ten and never returned.
A child on a cold day walking the streets of Biloxi,
The seat of Harrison County,
The poor man’s Riviera.
And when the child is hungry it wanders to the slop yards and
Peels shrimp for nickels by the hour,
Cracking slicked shells, freeing blood of its skin
In this poor man’s Riviera,
In this seat of Harrison County.
And all below, the smell of something sour and something sweet.
